Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed from Ancient Greek 'heúrēka' ('I have found it'), the first-person singular perfect indicative active of 'heurískein' ('to find'). According to classical legend, the mathematician Archimedes shouted the word after stepping into a bath and suddenly realizing that the volume of irregular objects could be measured by water displacement.
