Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the mid-18th century from French 'étiquette', originally meaning a small label or ticket (the same source as the English word 'ticket'). At the court of King Louis XIV at Versailles, small placards or instruction cards ('étiquettes') were posted to remind courtiers where to stand and how to behave, leading the word to denote formal court ceremony and polite manners.
