Word Origin & Etymology
Coined in the 1930s during the Great Depression from the verb "escape" and the suffix "-ist"; "escape" itself derives via Old French from Vulgar Latin "excappare", literally meaning "to get out of one's cloak" (leaving it behind in a pursuer's grasp).
