Word Origin & Etymology
From Middle English embrouden, borrowed from Anglo-Norman and Old French embroder ('to stitch on the edge'), which derives from Frankish *bruzdan ('to embroider'). The modern spelling with '-oi-' was influenced in the 15th century by association with 'broid', an archaic variant of 'braid'.
