Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the mid-17th century from Latin editor ('one who brings forth or publishes'), derived from the verb edere ('to put out, exhibit, or publish'). Interestingly, the English verb 'edit' was formed later in the late 18th century as a back-formation from 'editor'.
