Word Origin & Etymology
Coined in 1970 by American biologist Arthur W. Galston on the pattern of 'genocide', combining the prefix 'eco-' (from Ancient Greek 'oikos', meaning 'house' or 'habitat') with the suffix '-cide' (from Latin '-cidium', meaning 'a killing').
