Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed from Romanian Drăculea ('son of Dracul'), the patronymic of the 15th-century Wallachian prince Vlad III, whose father belonged to the Order of the Dragon (from Latin draco, meaning 'dragon'). The name became globally synonymous with vampirism following Bram Stoker's 1897 Gothic horror novel.
