Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the mid-20th century from Japanese dōjō, literally meaning 'place of the Way' (from dō 'way, path' + jō 'place'). Originally translating the Sanskrit Buddhist term bodhimaṇḍa (seat of awakening), it referred to a temple hall for Zen meditation before being adopted by Japanese martial arts schools.
