Word Origin & Etymology

First recorded in the mid-16th century, borrowed from Middle French désunion or formed within English from the prefix dis- ('apart' or 'lack of') and union (from Latin ūniō, meaning 'oneness'). In American historical writing, it became strongly associated with the political secession crisis preceding the Civil War.
