Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the late 16th century from Middle French désenchantement, meaning the breaking of a magical spell, derived ultimately from Latin incantare ('to chant a magic formula'). In the early 20th century, German sociologist Max Weber popularized the concept (as Entzauberung) to describe the secularization and rationalization of modern society.
