Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from French discothèque ('record library'), coined in the 1930s by blending disque ('disc, phonograph record') with bibliothèque ('library'). During the German occupation of Paris in World War II, it came to denote underground clubs where patrons danced to recorded jazz records instead of live bands.
