Word Origin & Etymology
From Middle English dirge, a contraction of Latin dirige ('direct!'), the imperative of dirigere, which is the opening word of the Latin antiphon 'Dirige, Domine, Deus meus, in conspectu tuo viam meam' ('Direct, O Lord, my God, my way in thy sight') chanted during the Catholic Office of the Dead.
