Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Old French disner ('to take the first meal of the day'), which derives from Vulgar Latin disjejunare, literally meaning 'to break one's fast' (from Latin dis- + jejunus 'fasting'). Over the centuries, as the main meal of the day shifted to the evening, the word came to refer specifically to eating dinner.
