Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the 15th century from Latin 'digitalis' ('of or belonging to a finger'), derived from 'digitus' ('finger' or 'toe'). Because counting was traditionally done on the fingers, the sense shifted from anatomy to numerical digits, and eventually in the mid-20th century to electronic computing systems that process discrete numerical values.
