Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the late 19th century from Ancient Greek diaspora ('dispersion'), from diaspeirein ('to scatter about, disperse'), composed of dia- ('across, apart') and speirein ('to sow, scatter'). It was first used in the Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible to describe the dispersion of the Jews.
