Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Anglo-Norman French 'demise' (originally a legal term meaning a transfer of an estate), the feminine past participle of Old French 'desmettre' ('to dismiss or put away'), from Latin 'dimittere' ('to send away'). Because estates were commonly transferred upon the owner's death, the word gradually came to mean death or downfall itself.
