Word Origin & Etymology
Formed in early 20th-century American English from the verb 'debunk' plus the agentive suffix '-er'. The root 'bunk' is a shortening of 'bunkum' (or 'buncombe'), which originated in the 1820s after a U.S. congressman defended a long-winded, pointless speech by stating he was merely 'talking for Buncombe,' referring to his home county in North Carolina.
