Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Old French dauphin (literally "dolphin"), from Latin delphinus and Ancient Greek delphis. The title originated from the coat of arms bearing three dolphins used by the feudal lords of the Dauphiné region in southeastern France before the province was ceded to the French crown in 1349.
