Formed in the late 16th century as a compound of 'dairy' (from Middle English 'deierie', meaning a room for making butter and cheese) and 'maid'. Historically, dairymaids played an unintentional role in medical history when Edward Jenner observed in 1796 that their frequent exposure to cowpox protected them from contracting smallpox, leading to the first vaccine.
