Word Origin & Etymology
Named in honor of Saint Cyril (c. 826–869), a Byzantine Christian monk and missionary who, along with his brother Methodius, devised the precursor Glagolitic script to translate liturgical texts into Old Church Slavonic; the Cyrillic script itself was developed shortly afterward by their disciples in the First Bulgarian Empire.
