Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from French culotte ('knee-breeches'), a diminutive derived from cul ('buttocks'), which comes from Latin culus. Historically, the aristocratic style of wearing culottes gave rise to the French Revolutionary term sans-culottes ('without knee-breeches') for working-class revolutionaries who wore full-length trousers.
