Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the late 16th century from French consultant or directly from Latin consultantem, the present participle of consultare ('to deliberate or take counsel'). Originally referring to someone who asks for advice, its modern sense of a professional expert who provides advice became dominant in the 19th and 20th centuries.
