Word Origin & Etymology
First recorded in the late 14th century, the word derives from Old French confectionnier, from Medieval Latin confectionarius ('one who prepares medicines or sweetmeats'), ultimately from Latin confectio ('a making or preparing'). Historically, the term referred to apothecaries who compounded medicinal remedies using sugar and honey before narrowing to makers of sweets.
