Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in Middle English from Old French celebrite, from Latin celebritas ('multitude, fame, or solemnity'), derived from celeber ('frequented, populous, or famous'). Originally denoting a solemn religious rite or public ceremony, it shifted to mean 'fame' in the 17th century and 'a famous person' by the mid-19th century.
