Word Origin & Etymology
Originally formed in the late 14th century from the obsolete noun 'cater' (meaning a buyer of provisions, from Old North French 'acatour', ultimately from Latin 'accaptare' meaning 'to buy') with a redundant agentive '-er' suffix added; the modern verb 'cater' was later back-formed from 'caterer'.
