Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the mid-17th century from Spanish 'cargo' ('burden' or 'load'), derived from the verb 'cargar' ('to load') and ultimately tracing back to Late Latin 'carricare' ('to load onto a wagon') from the Celtic-rooted 'carrus' ('wheeled vehicle').
