Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed into Middle English from Anglo-Norman and Old French 'bouteillier' (cupbearer or officer in charge of the wine cellar), derived from 'bouteille' (bottle), from Late Latin 'buticula'. Historically, the role oversaw only the household's wine and liquor before evolving to encompass the entire domestic staff.
