Word Origin & Etymology
Formed from the adjective 'blatant', which was coined in the late 16th century by Edmund Spenser in 'The Faerie Queene' to describe a monstrous, thousand-tongued beast, possibly influenced by the Latin 'blaterare' (to babble) or the Scottish 'blate' (to bleat).
