Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the late 16th century from Middle French 'bigot' (an excessively religious person or hypocrite), of uncertain ultimate origin; according to traditional accounts, it originally arose in Old French as a derogatory term for Normans, supposedly from their frequent oath 'bi God' ('by God').
