Word Origin & Etymology
First recorded in the late 16th century (notably used by Shakespeare), the word originally meant having the face uncovered—either without a mask or without a beard. Because acting openly without a mask or disguise suggested audacity, the term quickly evolved into its figurative sense of being shameless or undisguised.
