Word Origin & Etymology
First recorded in the early 19th century, probably borrowed from French 'bah', a natural vocal exclamation of dismissal or disdain. Its popularity in English was cemented by Charles Dickens's 1843 novella 'A Christmas Carol', in which Ebenezer Scrooge famously exclaims 'Bah! Humbug!'.
