Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the late 16th century from French 'avenue' (originally meaning an 'approach' or 'arrival'), the feminine past participle of 'avenir' ('to arrive'), from Latin 'advenire' ('to come to'). It initially referred to a formal, tree-lined approach to a country house before broadening to mean a wide city street.
