Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed from Anglo-French 'auditour' and directly from Latin 'auditor' ('a hearer, listener'), from the verb 'audire' ('to hear'). The financial sense arose in the Middle Ages because official accounts were originally presented and examined orally before a designated listener.
