Word Origin & Etymology

Coined in the 16th century from the verb 'assess' plus the suffix '-ment'. It ultimately derives from the Medieval Latin 'assessare' (to fix a tax), from the Latin 'assidere' (to sit beside), referring to assistant judges who sat beside Roman magistrates to help calculate fines and taxes.
