Word Origin & Etymology

From Middle English 'napron', borrowed from Old French 'naperon' (a small tablecloth). The initial 'n' was lost in the 16th century through a linguistic process called rebracketing or false splitting, where 'a napron' was misheard and subsequently adopted as 'an apron'.
