Word Origin & Etymology
Formed in the 17th century from the adjective 'approximate' plus the adverbial suffix '-ly'. 'Approximate' derives from Late Latin 'approximatus', the past participle of 'approximare' ('to draw near to'), from 'ad-' ('to') and 'proximus' ('nearest', the superlative of 'prope', meaning 'near').
