Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed via Mexican Spanish from a Native American language of the American Southwest, most likely Zuni 'apachu' (meaning 'Navajo' or 'enemy') or Yavapai 'ʔpačə' (meaning 'people'). In the early 20th century, the word was also adopted in French slang for Parisian street gang members, perceived as fierce and independent.
