Word Origin & Etymology

As a needlework fabric, the term was coined in the late 19th century by the German textile manufacturer Zweigart, likely named in honor of Giuseppe Verdi's famous 1871 opera Aida. As a business framework, it is an acronym coined from the initial letters of Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action, attributed to American advertising pioneer E. St. Elmo Lewis in 1898.
