Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the early 17th century from French ajuster ('to put in order, arrange'), from Old French ajoster ('to bring together, place side by side'), derived from Late Latin adiuxtare ('to bring near', from ad- 'to' + iuxta 'near'); the modern spelling and sense were later influenced by association with Latin iustus ('right, exact').
