Word Origin & Etymology
Derived from the Mohawk word 'ha-de-ron-dah' meaning 'barkeaters', originally a derogatory term for neighboring Algonquian tribes who were forced to eat tree bark during winter famines. The name was later applied to the mountain range in New York, and subsequently to the style of chair popularized in that region.
