Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the 15th century from Anglo-French and Old French acuntant, the present participle of acunter ('to reckon or give an account'), ultimately from Late Latin accomputare ('to calculate'). Originally used in English Law for someone legally liable to render an account, it shifted in the 16th century to denote a professional manager of financial books.
