Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Old French abominable, from Late Latin abominabilis ('deserving of revulsion'), derived from Latin abominari ('to deprecate as an ill omen'), from ab- ('away from') and omen ('omen'). In Middle English and Early Modern English, it was frequently spelled abhominable due to a folk etymology falsely linking it to Latin ab homine ('away from man, inhuman').
