Word Origin & Etymology
Coined in the mid-19th century from the adjective 'abnormal' plus the noun-forming suffix '-ity'. 'Abnormal' itself was altered from earlier 'anormal' (via French from Medieval Latin 'anormalis') under the influence of the Latin phrase 'ab norma', meaning 'away from the rule'.
